This week I added South Carolina to my list of visited states — and that makes it my 9th! Oh, and it’s my very first official taste of the American South.
Somehow, we ended up planting ourselves in one of the richest country resorts in the U.S. — #palmettobluff. The house prices here look more like phone numbers, but the views totally make up for it.
The South really does feel different — even compared to Ohio. Nature here is on another level. It’s like being in a zoo… but you’re not quite sure who’s watching whom.
Two days in, and I’ve already seen dolphins, alligators, black squirrels, deer, and raccoons — all in plain sight.
Right now is the only time of year when the sun doesn’t boil the water, so all the wildlife is out and about.
A few fun facts:
- The American South is known for its good-looking guys. Ladies, all those “Alexa, find me an American boy to take me away” moments? This is where you want to be.
- That “YA” instead of “YOU ARE” thing? Yep, that’s Southern.
- Down here, you’ll be called honey and sweetheart even if you’re over 80. And I love their polite “Yes, ma’am.” 😏
- Back home, animals aren’t allowed in stores. Here, they actually have pet food in shops — mostly for dogs. #kindofwelcome
- Swimming in the South? Ocean only! Don’t even think about lakes or rivers unless you want an alligator exfoliation treatment. They’re everywhere.
- Golf. That’s it, that’s the fact. The biggest golf tournament in the U.S. happens right here in South Carolina (don’t ask me the name, no one could remember). And golf courses are literally everywhere.
Oh, and it was my first time seeing wild alligators and dolphins. Pretty impressive!
Who knows, maybe you’ll be the next exchange student exploring it!
Try it yourself!
