American Patriotism

This is America
Americans really do love their country. But not in some kind of blind, utopian way like the media sometimes shows. People here also complain about politicians, get frustrated with job markets, or criticize social services. But first—most of the time, it’s more out of boredom than because of actual big problems. The quality of life here is higher, and Americans know it. Second—whatever happens inside the U.S., it still feels better, safer, and more understandable to them than anything outside the country.
The U.S. is its own world—closed off, but very comfortable for those who live here. Most people don’t even think about leaving, because the arguments “for” moving abroad are way weaker than the arguments “against.” And it’s not even just about how great life is under the flag with 50 stars. The truth is, everything “from above” is arranged in a way that makes an American want to come back if they ever step outside. And this shows up in small but very important details:
1. Measurements — The metric system? Nope. Inches, miles, Fahrenheit—numbers themselves feel different. Why even deal with the outside world if it’s confusing?
2. Language — Learn English, and you’re set for life. It’s spoken worldwide, so there’s no real need to learn another language… and no real reason to study abroad.
3. Foreigners’ status — In the U.S., residents and citizens always get the edge. Whether it’s discounts in giant stores or how taxes work, Americans are constantly reminded they have an advantage over outsiders.
Each of these things on its own might not feel huge. But together, they really shape how people see the world. Living in the U.S., you realize: there’s no strong desire—and no real need—to look for life outside. The conditions for any kind of lifestyle are already here. Just build your own ladder with as many steps as you want—and climb!

Now it’s your turn! Imagine yourself in the U.S.—would you feel the same way? Try to describe what “patriotism” would look like for you as an exchange student!
